The Phoenix Room, operated by the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce, hosts events year-round and is located in the heart of Newburyport’s downtown historic district.
This distinctive space, which occupies the entire third floor of the historic building, showcases Federalist grandeur at its finest. Its stunning features include a magnificent brass chandelier, original working fireplaces, and hardwood floors. Thirteen, six-foot-high windows afford picturesque views of historic downtown Newburyport and fill the room with natural light complimenting its charm, providing an unforgettable experience.
Built in the 1809 and designed by Charles Bulfinch, the Phoenix Building takes its name from the Phoenix Marine & Fire Insurance Society. The building was destroyed by Newburyport’s Great Fire of 1811. Like a Phoenix from the ashes, the edifice, as it exists today, was rebuilt and opened once again in November 1811 as a public meeting place.
By 1965 downtown Newburyport was in such disrepair that it was slated for demolition. However, it was decided to restore the historic downtown, including the elegant Phoenix building.
The top floor of the Phoenix Room was further improved in 1984 and once again began hosting events, the first being a party for the Chamber of Commerce and Anna Jaques Hospital.
The Phoenix Room is a highly sought-after location for weddings, corporate and social events. The space is best suited for seated meals up to 120 guests and cocktail style events for a maximum of 140.
