Wow your guests with a backdrop of impressive scale for your wedding ceremony at the SS Meteor Whaleback Ship Museum. As the last Whaleback ship in existence, the SS Meteor is a testament to the innovative design of Alexander McDougall and Superior’s contribution to maritime history. Named after the low profile the cigar-shaped hull has in the water when fully loaded, 33 Whaleback ships were built and launched in Superior between 1888 and 1898. The SS Meteor, originally christened the Frank Rockefeller, was constructed in the summer of 1896 and has transported varying types of cargo, from iron ore to automobiles, in her nearly 120 years of existence. Now land berthed on Barker Island, just one mile from where she was originally launched, the SS Meteor is open to the public for tours. Shake up the traditional wedding routine by allowing your guests to explore the SS Meteor top to bottom, from the pilot house to the cargo hold, for a uniquely memorable experience. Open mid-May through mid-October, the SS Meteor Whaleback Ship Museum is a great location for the bride looking for an interesting, outdoor location for her wedding ceremony or photo opportunity that is sure to be remembered.
